Greer CPW Power Restoration Progress Update

Overnight, Greer CPW crews successfully restored service to our hospitals and today, Saturday, September 28, we have also restored service to our water filter plant and wastewater treatment facilities. We have successfully reconnected over 12,000 customers in 36 hours.

Our focus remains on prioritizing both residential and commercial customers to maximize power restoration. Currently, 70% of our backbone feeders are energized—these are essential for restoring power to homes and businesses. We expect to have the remaining feeders energized by daybreak on Sunday, September 29.

While some customers may experience longer restoration times, our dedicated crews will continue working through the night. We are also grateful for the support of additional crews from Missouri and Ohio, who are helping us expedite the process.

Although we cannot provide specific estimates for individual outages at this moment, please rest assured that restoring your service safely and quickly is our top priority. Thank you for your patience and understanding during this time.

  • We still have about 10,000 customers without power.
  • Tree crews are out removing debris.  We continue to get hundreds of reports of “tree on line”.
  • The two hospitals are back ON and not running on generators.
  • Our focus today will be the water filter plant and wastewater treatment plants.   They are currently running on generators.
  • Our next focus is getting circuits restored on the Victor Hill and Duke Street substations.  Once that happens, more customers will be restored.
  • We will then prioritize critical customers like the grocery stores, gas stations, banks and medical.

9/28/24 5:00 AM update – Tree crews worked through the night to remove trees on lines and in the roadway.  More progress will be made when daybreaks.

9/27/24 11:00 PM Update – We continue to work around the clock to restore service.  If power was restored in the Riverside area but it went out, we are working to get a tree off a line in the area.

Tropical Storm Outage Update

We appreciate your patience as we navigate the aftermath of the tropical storm Helene. Currently, over four million are without power across the Southeast, including over one million in South Carolina. Locally, Greer CPW is currently awaiting Duke Energy’s repairs to their transmission lines. In the meantime, our tree trimming crews are actively clearing roads and lines, addressing numerous downed trees. CPW electric crews and contractors have begun restoration efforts, anticipating the return of our substations once Duke completes their repairs.

Our restoration priorities are as follows:

  1. Hospitals
  2. Water and wastewater treatment plants – to minimize threatening water and wastewater issues on top on what we are already experiencing,
  3. Residential and commercial areas, focusing on restoring service to the largest number of customers as quickly as possible.

We anticipate an extended outage period. Please take necessary precautions to ensure you and your family’s safety. We encourage you to follow us on social media for regular updates and information regarding the situation. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

9/27/24 2:00 PM update – We are anticipating extended outage times related to Tropical Storm Helene however we have staff and equipment on hand and will be working until all of our customers are restored.

9/27/24 1:30 PM update- Greer CPW crews just restored 4 circuits at our Duke Street substation.  This should restore service to some of our customers.  We are working as quickly as we can however, we have sustained extensive damage to our system.

9/27/24 – 7:30 AM update – There are multiple high voltage transmission lines out on Duke Energy’s side which is impacting Greer CPW customers. We are waiting for them to bring their transmission lines online before we can restore service. Currently we do not have an ETA on those repairs but will restore service as quickly as we can.

6:45 AM update – We are aware of an issue with our online reporting system.  The issue should be resolved and you should be able to report your outage online.

As of 5:30 AM on 9/27, we are aware and working on widespread outages related to Tropical Storm Helene.  Crews will restore power as quickly and safely as possible.

Some frequently asked questions (FAQs) related to power outages, restoration and the priority of which we restore service can be found on our website.

Lake Cunningham and Lake Robinson parks are currently closed as of 9/26.

Greer CPW is closely monitoring the path of Hurricane Helene.  It is predicted to make landfall in Florida and be reduced to a Tropical Storm when it hits the Upstate region. Weather reports indicate the biggest impact to our service territory will be mid to late afternoon on Thursday and into Friday morning. Heavy rainfall, wind gusts, isolated tornados and power outages are expected with this weather event.

BEFORE the storm:

  • Prepare emergency kit with flashlights, extra batteries, food, water, clothing, charged cell phones and important documents.
  • Update your contact info with Greer CPW.  Log into your Customer Service Portal and hit the “notification” tab.
  • Clean storm drains in your community so water can flow freely.
  • Secure boats and docks.  If you live lakeside on Cunningham or Robinson, please remove any furniture from docks and leave slack in dock lines to allow for changes in lake levels.
  • Secure your home and yard. Remove any items from your yard like planters, trampolines, toys and furniture that may float away during flooding or move during a wind gust.

DURING the storm:

  • Consider all lines energized.  Report trees on lines and downed power lines in the Greer CPW territory to 864-848-5500.
  • Report and follow outages.  Report power outages using your Customer Service Portal.  Log in and hit the “report power outage” button.  You can also view current Greer CPW outages on our website.
  • Listen to trusted weather sources.  Make sure you have a way to receive emergency information and storm updates.  It could be a weather radio, app or alerts on your cell phone.
  • Keep ’em closed.  If you lose power, keep your refrigerator doors closed as much as possible.  Food should last up to 4+ hours during a power outage.
  • Stay away from windows.  Take refuge in a small interior room like your closet, hallway or bathroom on the lowest level and away from windows and glass doors.

AFTER the storm:

  • If you plan to remove downed trees, call 811 to have underground utility lines marked.  Tree roots may have grown around our utility lines.  This includes stump grinding, digging with heavy equipment and shoveling.
  • Stay out of floodwater.  Floodwater can contain raw sewage, pet waste, motor oil, pesticides, downed power lines, sharp objects, snakes and bacteria.
  • Avoid sightseeing. Even after a storm passes, there are many hazards that can harm you.  Added traffic on the road may prevent our staff from getting to people who need help.
