Greer CPW Lake Wardens and contractors are preparing for maintenance on Lake Cunningham dam starting in early February which will cause lake levels to fluctuate. Homeowners living around Lake Cunningham should be aware lake levels will be adjusted by approximately 5 feet over a 2- week period. Residents living lakeside are encouraged to secure boats, kayaks and docks.
“We understand maintenance is never convenient, but this work is necessary to continue providing quality services to the residents of Greer, said Mike Parris, Greer CPW Chief Lake Warden. We will work with our contractors to ensure the project meets its deadline and restores the lake by spring.”
Lake Cunningham park will be closed during this period for safety reasons and includes the boat ramp, shelter and fishing pier. Park goers are encouraged to visit Lake Robinson at 2544 Mays Bridge Road. We do not anticipate any water quality impacts due to this work.
Anticipated Schedule
- Lake Cunningham drawdown – Approximately 2 weeks starting the first part of February.
- Construction – Approximately 2 weeks following the drawdown period.
- Lake Cunningham level returns to normal – Approximately 2-4 weeks following construction.
*Schedule is subject to change pending weather, supplies, etc.
Greer CPW will work to communicate to impacted lakeside residents through traditional mailings, phone calls, texts and emails. Any questions regarding this work should be directed to the Lake Warden’s Office at 864-895-3645.
FAQs related to dam work
What is a “drawdown”?
A lake drawdown is the temporary lowering of a lake’s water level.
Why do you need to reduce the water levels at Lake Cunningham in February 2025?
Drawdowns allow us to safely perform maintenance that we would not otherwise be able to handle when the lakes are at full pool. We also use this opportunity to exercise valves and gates used to control and maintain full pool status.
How long will the drawdown period take?
We anticipate opening valves slowly the first part of February. It may take up to 2 weeks to reduce the lake levels where we need them. We plan to reduce Lake Cunningham levels by 5 feet.
Will this work have any impact on recreation and fishing at Lake Cunningham?
Due to the safety of our contractors and community, Lake Cunningham park will be closed during this work. We encourage you to visit Lake Robinson at 2544 Mays Bridge Road, Greer SC 29651.
I live around Lake Cunningham. Can I do work on my property or dock during this time?
Yes. We encourage repair work to personal docks and erosion control. Please remember to obtain a permit through the Lake Warden’s office for any dock or debris clearing plans.
Do I need to remove my boat or kayak during the drawdown period?
We recommend all residents living around the lake properly secure their boats, kayaks and docks. This may include removing boats on trailers and/or securing your items when the lake levels increase.
Why wasn’t I notified about this work sooner?
While we do our best to communicate and schedule projects, it was important for us to complete the maintenance before the spring season when warmer temperatures may impact water quality. We appreciate your patience as we complete this important work.
